How to find cheap tyres without sacrificing quality
The price of a single tyre can vary enormously from one retailer to another. For the same product, the difference can reach 15 to 40% depending on the seller. Using a tyre price comparison tool before you buy ensures you never overpay. On CompareTyres, every result displays the unit price, delivery cost and availability with no hidden surprises. Budget brands such as Nexen, Nankang and Linglong offer cheap tyres from as little as £30, with performance that is perfectly adequate for daily city and motorway driving. For a better balance between price and longevity, mid-range brands (Hankook, Falken, Vredestein, Kumho) frequently rival premium tyres at a price 25 to 35% lower.
Compare tyres by vehicle or by dimension
There are two ways to find tyres at the best price on compare-tyres.co.uk. The search by dimension is the most direct method: enter the width, profile and rim diameter (for example 195/65 R15, 225/45 R17 or 215/60 R16) and instantly compare every available offer. If you do not know your tyre size, use the search by vehicle: select the make, model and generation of your car, and our database automatically displays the sizes approved by the manufacturer. We cover more than 5,000 models and 11,000 generations, from the Ford Fiesta to the BMW 3 Series, from the Vauxhall Corsa to the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3.
Summer tyres, winter tyres, all-season tyres: a buying guide
Choosing the right type of tyre for the season is critical for your safety on UK roads. The summer tyre performs best on dry and wet surfaces above 7 °C thanks to a harder rubber compound that resists heat build-up. It is the optimal choice from April to October. The winter tyre (marked 3PMSF, the alpine snowflake symbol) retains its flexibility below 7 °C and reduces braking distances on snow by 30 to 50% compared with a summer tyre. It is strongly recommended from November to March, particularly in Scotland and northern England. The all-season tyre offers a practical compromise for drivers with moderate mileage or those who prefer not to swap tyres twice a year. It eliminates the cost of a second set of tyres and seasonal fitting charges. On our comparison site, filter by season to find cheap winter tyres, the best-priced summer tyres or the lowest-cost all-season tyres.
Reading and understanding your tyre size
The markings on the sidewall of your tyre contain all the information you need. Take the example 205/55 R16 91V: 205 is the tread width in millimetres, 55 is the aspect ratio (the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width), R indicates radial construction, 16 is the rim diameter in inches, 91 is the load index (615 kg per tyre) and V is the speed rating (up to 149 mph). You can find this information on the sidewall of your current tyres, on the sticker inside the driver's door frame or in your vehicle handbook. Fitting tyres of a size not approved for your vehicle could result in an MOT failure and seriously compromise road safety.
When to change your tyres: the warning signs
UK law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre's breadth, around its entire circumference. Driving with illegal tyres carries 3 penalty points and a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre under the Highway Code. However, safety experts recommend replacing your tyres at 3 mm, because below that threshold braking distances on wet roads increase significantly. Other signs of wear to look for include the tread wear indicators (small raised bars moulded into the grooves), uneven wear (a sign of incorrect alignment or tyre pressure), sidewall cracking, or any tyre older than five years. Planning ahead and comparing prices in advance through CompareTyres lets you take advantage of the best deals instead of paying full price in an emergency.
Tyre brands: from premium to budget
Our tyre comparator lists more than 250 tyre brands, from global leaders to value manufacturers. Premium brands (Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Pirelli, Dunlop) invest heavily in research and development, delivering top performance in braking, tread life and road noise comfort. Mid-range brands (Hankook, Firestone, Uniroyal, Yokohama, Falken, BFGoodrich) offer an excellent balance of quality and price with performance close to premium levels. Budget brands (Nexen, Nankang, Linglong, Barum) allow you to fit cheap tyres without compromising safety. The EU tyre label (grades A to E for wet grip, fuel efficiency and road noise) helps you compare models objectively regardless of brand, making your tyre comparison straightforward and transparent.
Buy tyres online: savings and convenience
Ordering tyres online is on average 20 to 30% cheaper than buying from a high-street garage or fast-fit centre. Most online tyre retailers offer free delivery across the UK, and many provide a fitting service through a network of partner garages near your postcode. CompareTyres brings all these offers together on a single page: you compare the tyre price, shipping costs, current promotions and stock availability without having to browse between multiple websites. Our ranking is neutral and based solely on price. We do not promote any retailer over another. Our revenue comes exclusively from affiliate commissions, and the price you pay is exactly the same as the price shown on the retailer's own website.
